Unemployment
Governor Gavin Newsom announced that starting this Sunday, CA workers who are receiving unemployment benefits will receive an extra $600 on top of their weekly amount, as part of the new Pandemic Additional Compensation (PAC) initiated by the CARES Act. The first payment is going out Sunday and the higher benefits will last four months.
Stress Reduction
These are trying times for everyone. If you need some ideas on stress reduction and self care, the CDC offers these.
- Take breaks from watching, reading, or listening to news stories, including social media. Hearing about the pandemic repeatedly can be upsetting.
- Take care of your body.
- Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate.
- Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals.
- Exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep.
- Avoid alcohol and drugs
- Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.
- Connect with others.

Federal Stimulus Package
To create a safety net for those whose jobs and businesses are affected by the pandemic, the stimulus will provide one-time payments to taxpayers. The stimulus will provide a one-time payment of $1,200 to qualifying adults with no annual income or incomes not exceeding $75,000 per year. A one-time payment of up to $2,400 will be provided to joint-filers with an annual income totaling less than $150,000. Families will also receive an additional $500 per child. You must file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 to receive this payment.
Help for Businesses
The Mayor just announced that LA CARES Corps is a partnership between the City and County of LA to provide small businesses with the help they need to apply for federal loans under the CARES Act.
Excess Trash
Sanitation logoSingle Family Homes & Trash Pick Up: To address the added trash and recycling items as we are staying at home the City will temporarily offer free extra collection on the black and blue bins during your regularly scheduled collection day. If you have extra bags that don’t fit in your bins, meet the truck outside and once your bin is emptied, refill it while they are still there and they will collect it again. Starts Monday.
All of our SAFE Centers will be closed until further notice. Please do not place household hazardous waste (HHW) in any of your bins. HHW should be stored until SAFE Centers reopen. E-waste may be scheduled for curbside collection by calling 1-800-773-2489 or by using the MyLA311 app.
Slow Internet
It Isn’t Just You — The Internet Is Actually Super-Slow Lately: According to a new report by Broadband Now, a consumer advocate website that compares U.S. internet service providers (ISPs), many cities are experiencing internet slowdowns during the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.
To cope with the onslaught of streamers, YouTube announced it will default to standard, rather than high, definition for users worldwide. Facebook and Netflix have also decided to cut the overall quality of their streams while the pandemic continues, for the same reason.
Volunteer for the Census

The phone banking team will ask community leaders like yourself to make calls to other Angelenos across the city to encourage them to respond to the Census, answer their questions about how to respond, and also check to make sure they are aware of the resources available to help during the COVID-19 crisis.
